South Africa’s relatively stable rand has provided importers and exporters with greater cost certainty in recent months but businesses should remain prepared for renewed currency volatility as global economic risks persist.
According to the South African Trade Desk, the rand has proved more resilient than expected despite geopolitical tensions, elevated global inflation and uncertainty surrounding international trade.
However, shifting US monetary policy, global trade disputes and commodity price movements could trigger renewed volatility in the months ahead, affecting import costs, export competitiveness and supply chain planning.
Businesses involved in international trade should strengthen their foreign exchange risk management rather than relying on the rand’s recent stability, the desk says.
Importers and exporters with international procurement operations are encouraged to review their currency exposure regularly, consider forward planning and diversify sourcing strategies to reduce the impact of sudden exchange-rate movements.
While the stronger rand has helped ease the cost of imported goods, the South African Trade Desk cautions that global economic conditions remain uncertain and businesses should remain flexible in managing international supply chains.
