After a slow start in January, trade conditions improved in February with the non-seasonally adjusted TAI (Trade Activity Index) increasing by 9 points to 57 while the seasonally adjusted TAI gained 6 points, according to the SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
“This suggests that the improvement cannot solely be ascribed to a seasonal occurrence. In February 2011, the TAI also increased strongly to 56 from 49 in January 2011 but then started to lose momentum,” the statement said.
Trade expectations advanced more strongly in February than in January as the TEI (Trade Expectations Index) increased by 5 points to 67. Trade expectations are currently higher than the TEI of 65 in February 2011.
