Automotive manufacturer Toyota is set to design a zero emission system for heavy duty trucks, which according to market intelligence company Fuel Cell Today, helps vehicles operate silently and more efficiently than diesel or gas engines.
According to a statement released by Toyota, the proof of concept truck will form part of a feasibility study by Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) during this year’s summer period in Los Angeles (June to September).
The study will examine the potential of using hydrogen fuel cell technology in the road freight sector and is called “Project Portal”.
The zero-emission truck is currently fully functional, with the ability to conduct port drayage operations – transporting goods over a short distance – while only emitting water vapour, according to a TMNA spokesperson.
Fuel Cell Today points out that since hydrogen can be produced wherever there is water and a source of power, generation of fuel can be distributed and does not have to be grid-dependent.
