Delays in the implementation of reforms have seen Mozambique drop three places in the World Bank’s “Ease of Doing Business” global rankings. There were no reforms to make it easier to do business in Mozambique between the 2019 and 2020 reports. Placed 138th out of 190 countries globally in the ranking puts Mozambique around half way in the sub-Saharan rankings.Neighbouring South Africa is ranked 84th, Eswatini 121st, Zimbabwe 140th, Zambia 85th, and Malawi 109th. Clustered around Mozambique are Niger (132), Cabo Verde (137), Zimbabwe (140), and Tanzania (141).Only two sub-Saharan African economies rank in the top 50 for ease of doing business while most of the bottom 20 economies in the global rankings are from the region.The regional average ranking is 140th, with Somalia at the bottom (190), and Mauritius leading at 13th globally.
