In line with South Africa’s national Employment Equity Act, which stipulates that companies should give priority to disadvantaged groups, Transnet Freight Rail has employed 138 people living with disabilities in one week alone, accounting for 0.54% of the current workforce, CEO Siyabonga Gama said yesterday.
An additional 197 employees will be appointed bringing the number of People Living with Disabilities recruited within a short space of time to 335. This will be in addition to the 194 already employed in the organisation.
Commenting on the milestone, Gama said that TFR had over the years, supported various governmental initiatives aimed at integrating people with disabilities into the working environment.
In terms of job creation overall, by the end of this financial year TFR will have hired 4 489 employees externally bringing the total number of employees to about 26 464.
