Tanzanian agriculture company Kilimo Argano is looking at bolstering the country’s agro-industrialisation strategy through encouraging grassroots farmers to grow bananas and pineapples from seed.
The East African nation, known for its tropical climate and torrential rain, has already rolled out a seedling initiative on the island of Zanzibar and elsewhere on mainland Tanzania, propagating young plants through cultivating tissue cultures.
According to Kilimo MD Ammar Mussaji, the company’s rapid seedling techniques have proven so successful it believes it could demonstrably boost banana and pineapple production.
Provided that Tanzanians embrace Kilimo’s farming methods, Mussaji said the country hoped to become a leading exporter of bananas and pineapples.
It would, however, entail training people, Mussaji added.
