Fine footwork is required to master the balancing act of post-Covid transport challenges, made even more taxing by business disruption experienced on the home front, says Solly Engelbrecht of the Spar Group.
According to the retailer’s national logistics executive, resilience in the face of domestic upheaval and crumbling infrastructure will save the day for supply chain service in South Africa.
“The key going forward will be building on our strengths while navigating the various challenges on the local landscape – disruptions through protests, attacks on drivers, failing infrastructure, load shedding and port chaos.”
Engelbrecht, who has worked his way up from warehouse systems manager to distribution direction and beyond over a period of almost three decades with the group, said attention to detail was more important than ever.
In a column expressing his views, he says: “It is imperative that major retailers on which people depend ensure stock levels are healthy, demand is matched, and the supply chain is working like clockwork, no matter how challenging the environment outside.”
