The reconstruction and deepening of Maydon Wharf at the Port of Durban is beginning to pay off, with port manager Moshe Motlohi pointing out that the South African Sugar Association (Sasa) is modifying two ship loaders in order for them to be compatible with the berth modification.
“The modification is now in its final stages and the off loaders have been refurbished at a cost of R28 million,” he said.
Motlohi said the equipment had been upgraded to improve the efficiency of the loading process as well as to improve the operators’ control of the equipment.
Other upgrades include more efficient electrical motors, a new motor control centre panel and the ability to load larger vessels.
Four of the six berths under reconstruction at Maydon Wharf are fully operational. Work on Berths 3 and 4 has started with a contractor fully established on site, according to Motlohi.
