President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed what the logistics industry has been telling government for years - “our ports are congested and inefficient”.
For the freight industry this is one of the most significant sentences in the 7 393-word State of The Nation (Sona) delivered in parliament last Thursday.
Ramaphosa added: “During the course of this year, we will undertake a fundamental overhaul of the Durban port – the third largest container terminal in the southern hemisphere – to reduce delays and costs”.
It’s a commitment that the President made in October last year – and on which he will hopefully deliver.
FTW has seen and reported on a steady increase in the volumes from the region moving from Durban to Walvis Bay, Maputo, Beira and Dar es Salaam.
