Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) is investigating the deaths of two security guards who were hit by a train in Mpumalanga and killed at the weekend.
TFR said in a statement that the train had struck the two security guards on Sunday night.
“TFR sends its condolences to the families of two private security guards who died under tragic circumstances. This incident occurred at Wildrand, close to Mkhondo/Piet Retief, where the two guards were struck by a train on the adjacent line while guarding a staged train,” TFR said.
TFR has not yet released the names of the security guards and said their families were still being briefed regarding the tragedy.
TFR’s North-Corridor Managing Executive, Ali Motala, said the parastatal was investigating the matter.
“A full investigation into this tragic occurrence will be conducted before further details can be made public. We are truly saddened by this tragedy and send condolences to the families of brave colleagues who paid the ultimate price to protect our country’s essential economic infrastructure against the scourge of theft, vandalism and sabotage,” said Motala.
