South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) on Monday revealed that it was developing its first marine lithium ion battery system for ships.
According to SHI, the system will reduce fuel consumption by controlling and managing the on-board generators and power load.
“This newly developed battery system is an eco-friendly technology that enables reductions in emissions of pollutant substances and in operating costs as well.”
SHI added that the battery could be applied to any type of vessel.
"The modular battery system will provide high versatility to meet specific operational demands such as the adjustment of battery capacity according to vessel size and power usage," Shim Yong-Lae, SHI vice president of the ship & offshore research institute, added.
The system was jointly developed with local battery manufacturer Samsung SDI.
The shipbuilder added that it was working with Finnish power equipment manufacturers Wartsila to develop an energy storage system for ships.
