In a strategic move to bolster connectivity and enhance regional accessibility, South African Airways (SA A) has announced the expansion of its domestic route network, including Gqeberha as its third domestic route effective from December 13, 2023 to Sunday, March 31, 2024.The new route underscores the airline's commitment to fostering economic ties and facilitating seamless uplift of airfreight, said Keke Mokwena, SA A Cargo manager."The significance of this corridor development cannot be overstated, as Gqeberha plays a pivotal role in linking the Eastern Cape to the broader SA A network," said Mokwena. As a critical domestic route, Gqeberha will now connect the coastal city with Johannesburg through two daily f lights, seven days a week. The route complements SA A's existing daily f lights from Durban and Cape Town, creating a robust network that provides options for customers and stimulates economic activity and trade in the region."The expansion of the SA A domestic, regional and international network is key in providing the industry with more freight movement options. Beyond facilitating the efficient movement of goods, a robust and well-developed transport corridor fosters sustainable economic and social development within local communities."He said the coastal market was also a critical corridor that connected South Africa to the African region. "West Africa, with the recent addition of Abidjan f lights in November, is crucial in connecting South Africa with this important region. The steady reintroduction of international and regional f lights will be critical for network contribution and sustainability. This will improve connectivity and facilitate cross-border cargo movement in the region," he said. "The Eastern Cape is the hub of the automotive industry in South Africa along with other key suppliers operating here. SA A has always been pivotal in meeting the demands of this industry and moving products both domestically and internationally."Mokwena said inadequate infrastructure remained one of the critical challenges facing the sector when it came to developing corridors. "The industry is highly regulated and requires proper infrastructure to realise the market's potential fully. We are in a privileged position that SA A Cargo has world-class facilities operating in key areas within the South African market. By forging strategic partnerships, SAA Cargo delivers a heightened sense of assurance to both its existing clients and potential customers. These collaborative efforts underscore the commitment to maintaining a secure and safe environment within the SA A Cargo facility."
