The Rwandan government plans to upgrade its domestic airport in Gisenyi, near its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, to international standards by 2020 according to the African Airlines Association.
The country’s international airport, located in Rwanda’s capital Kigali, will be closed and replaced with a new international airport at Bugesera in the south-eastern part of the country.
Rwandan transport minister Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye noted that Gisenyi International Airport would be built on yet-to-be-provided land located 160 kilometres north-west of the capital.
The Rwandan government has already commissioned advisers to prepare a feasibility study and business plan for the project.
