Oshoek – A South African
Revenue Service official
was killed by a run-away
truck last Monday at
Swaziland's Oshoek
border post.
The accident occurred
on the South African side
of the border post that is
the most heavily used by
traffic to and from SA
and Swaziland.
A driver of an articulated
truck bearing construction
materials reportedly
left the vehicle’s engine
running unattended as
he headed for the Sars
office to make a goods
declaration.
The truck brake
disengaged, and the vehicle
headed straight for the
customs building. Upon
impact one room of the
structure was completely
destroyed and its roof was
wrapped around the truck’s
top and windscreen. The
office was occupied by
four Sars agents at the
time. One died instantly.
Three others were
transported to hospital in
critical condition.
“Obviously there
will be a safety review
pending the outcome of the investigation into this
tragedy, and rules about
leaving vehicles with their
engines running will be
enforced,” a police source
told FTW.
