Stronger partnerships between government departments, the logistics sector and cargo owners are needed to build on the successes achieved in facilitating cross-border trade.“While improvements in infrastructure, automation and cross-border cooperation are paving the way for more efficient trade, significant hurdles such as regulatory disparities, infrastructural limitations and economic pressures must be addressed,” Natasha Lawrence-Ramiah, Saco Shipping Johannesburg ocean and road branch freight manager, told Freight News.“Collaborative efforts between governments, businesses and stakeholders will be essential to overcome these challenges and fully unlock the potential of cross-border trade in the southern African region.“We have always believed that collaborating with local logistics providers in a country will strengthen our network and improve service efficiency,” she adds.Joint action is also needed to manage risks.“The logistics sector should look to implement comprehensive risk management strategies, including insurance and security protocols, to mitigate the impact of political and economic instability.”The rise of e-commerce, and therefore the transport of high-value goods across borders, presents new risks. “With growing concerns over cargo theft and security, logistics providers are prioritising protective measures, including enhanced tracking systems and secure transport solutions,” she says.Lawrence-Ramiah believes it is also important to continually invest in training staff in compliance, risk management and cultural awareness to navigate the complexities of cross-border logistics more effectively.“Different regulations across countries can slow down the logistics process, with varying customs procedures and documentation requirements.”Saco has reintroduced its monthly consol service into Luanda to create opportunities for South African exporters.“As trade barriers decrease, there is significant potential for South African businesses to expand into neighbouring markets.“This will increase demand for the reliable logistics and value-added services, such as warehousing and distribution, that Saco provides,” Lawrence-Ramiah says.
