Transporters on the R21 and surrounding vicinity in Gauteng are advised to proceed with caution after irate service delivery protesters from Tembisa torched a truck this morning.
Based on what has been broadcast and shared via social media by the Transit Assistance Bureau, the incident happened at the Olifantsfontein bridge across the airport highway.
Residents living in the area claim that Ekurhuleni mayor, Tania Campbell, is not taking their grievances seriously.
Community members airing their views this morning said Campbell had on several occasions been invited to attend meetings aimed at addressing the lack of proper service delivery, to no avail.
Apparently, no-shows by the mayor have led to simmering resentment among residents that their plight is simply not important enough.
One resident said the cost of electricity in the area had skyrocketed.
She said whereas R100 pay-as-you-go used to last a few days, it now amounted to very little power.
In the meantime, at least one transporter told Transist that the R21 was clear.
Another advised hauliers to remain vigilant in the area, especially after calls via social media
for a “total shutdown” of Tembisa today, August 1.
