As part of a strategy to attract larger vessels, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has commissioned three new tugboats for the Port of Tema.
The ASD tugboats, which are the first to be deployed in Central and West Africa, are of 80 tonnes bollard pull and capable of performing firefighting and rescue functions.
GPHA director general, Michael Luguje, said the boats had been commissioned to enhance the port’s capacity to receive modern container vessels and bulk carriers.
“We are now capable of handling up to 20 000-TEU container vessels,” he said.
