Port operators need to focus on reducing emissions from their operations as they face increasingly stringent environmental regulations and a highly competitive business landscape according to cargo handling manufacturer, Kalmar.
A statement by the company noted that new developments such as electrification, hybrid technology and energy regeneration had significant potential to reduce on-site air emissions from container handling equipment.
“However, the demand for the different emission reducing technologies varies widely between geographies, industries and equipment type used at ports,” said a Kalmar spokesperson.
Kalmar pointed out that several manufacturers currently believe that new container handling equipment will be electric-powered in ten years’ time.
“Since container handling equipment fleets have relatively long lifetimes, ports seeking to meet future zero-emissions targets are investing in electric equipment now,” added the spokesman.
