The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) has recalled 12 brands of tinned 400-gram pilchards over safety concerns.
This comes after it emerged that the products could have been compromised on the production line when sauce was added to fish in the can at West Point Processors.
According to the NRCS this could affect the safety of consumers.
The NRCS has confirmed that the affected products bear the production codes ZST29 or ZSC29 on top of the cans and has urged consumers to return these products.
“Both the tomato sauce and chilli sauce variants are part of the recall,” the regulator said.
The affected brands are Deep Catch, Mammas, Prime Ocean, Spar, Sunny, Shoprite Ritebrand, Cape Point, Checkers Housebrand, U Brand, Saldanha, West Point and OK Housebrand.
The NRCS has called on wholesalers, retailers and informal traders to remove the affected tins from their shelves with immediate effect. - Zoë van Rooyen
