Operations at Berth 208 at the Port of Richards Bay have returned to normal following a diesel spillage at the berth yesterday.
A statement from Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) noted that while investigations were currently under way, preliminary reports indicated that the spillage had been caused by a failed gasket on the tanker that had been operating at the berth at the time of the spill.
Following the report of the incident, TNPA activated its business continuity plan and deployed emergency response teams.
Clean-up operations are also under way, and these include the installation of absorbent booms to contain the spillage and the application of absorbent material.
