The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse is hopeful that the new head of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) will "rectify" the e-tolling situation and engage the public on projects and decisions it makes in future.
“Outa welcomes the appointment of Skhumbuzo Macozoma as the CEO of Sanral and wishes him every success in his new role as head of the organisation, which requires serious change to address the dire financial and credibility issues that have unfolded over the past decade,” said Outa CEO, Wayne Duvenage.
This statement follows a statement by the Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters, yesterday (Monday), officially welcoming Macozoma as Nazir Alli’s successor.
"Mr Alli has delivered good quality national roads which form part of the country’s critical infrastructure. Without good national roads, the economy would choke. As Mr Alli goes into retirement, we wish him and his family well," Peters said in a statement.
She said Macozoma, a civil engineer, brought strong professional credentials to the post of CEO, including serving as chief director of integrated infrastructure network development at the Department of Transport between 2003 and 2007, as well as overseeing transport and logistics for the Soccer World Cup local organising committee between 2008 and 2010.
Key Sanral projects for Macozoma will include continuing to oversee the e-tolling system and projects such as the Moloto road between Pretoria and Mpumalanga, upgrades to the freight-heavy N3 national road and the building of the N2 Wild Coast toll road, another contested development.
