The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has issued new directives, effective from November 23, to address congestion at the Apapa area in Lagos.
Shipping companies are now required to house empty trucks at holding bays outside the port area pending vessel loading, and trucks called to access the port must maintain a single lane profile designated by a new traffic management/enforcement team.
The new traffic management team will be made up of the Nigerian police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Transport Management Agency, Nigerian Navy, National Civil Defence Corps and NPA security personnel.
NPA general manager, Abdullah Goje, said that the authority would advertise for the licensing of trailer parks to create holding bay facilities for trucks and would deploy a call-up system linking the port gate and the park to call trucks to access the port at the “appropriate” time.
Additionally, any trucks milling around the port in search of customers will be impounded.
