Attempts to smuggle macadamias out of Nairobi in contravention of a ban on unprocessed nuts imposed in June 2009 to enhance export potential have been foiled.
According to East Africa’s Business Daily, two trucks were impounded on suspicion that they were being used to smuggle the product in breach the ban.
It was suspected the cargo was destined for China - and a Chinese national believed to be behind the consignment escaped arrest after seeking refugee at the Chinese Embassy in Nairobi, the newspaper reported.
