The race for capacity supremacy in the wake of surging demand has seen Mediterranean Shipping Company pull ahead of the pack, Alphaliner is reporting.
According to the sea freight intelligence hub, MSC added 411 000 TEUs of capacity to its expanding fleet, mainly through the acquisition of used container vessels.
The growth of 10.7% saw the line taking its overall capacity to 4 266 805 TEUs.
Towards the end of November last year, it was reported that MSC was seeing the year out with another purchase of four used box ships, taking its tally of second-hand vessels to 124 since it started investing in this vein midway through 2020 (see related story: (https://tinyurl.com/3x9zp6).
Compared to the Swiss carrier, Danish operator Maersk only managed 3.4% of capacity growth, adding 142 405 TEUs to take its overall box capability to 4 279 305.
