Africa has two ports that made it into the “Top 10” in the latest Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) – Tangier-Mediterranean in Morocco and Egypt’s Port Said at the northern tip of the Suez Canal.
Now in its 3rd iteration, the data-based comparable index found that the Port of Yangshan fared the best of the 348 ports measured by the CPPI 2022.
The Chinese port south of Shanghai is followed by Salalah (Oman), Khalifa (UAE), Tangier-Mediterranean, Cartagena (Colombia), Tanjung Pelepas (Malaysia), Ningbo (China), Hamad (Qatar), Guangzhou (China), and Port Said.
The World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, compilers of the CPPI, said: “Performance is measured by the elapsed time between when a ship reaches a port to its departure from the berth, having completed its cargo exchange.
“The ranking is intended to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement for the benefit of key stakeholders in global trade, including government, shipping lines, port and terminal operators, shippers, logistics companies and consumers.”
Freight News will be looking at the index’s findings in greater detail in the coming days, with special emphasis on Africa and, more specifically, sub-Saharan ports.
