System caters for Method 1
As the industry gears up
for the July 1 deadline
for the mandatory
weighing of containers, Cargo
Handling Specialists is fielding
an increasing number of
requests for its mobile weighing
system that can be operated at
customers’ premises.
In terms of the new Solas
regulations, which place the
onus for the supply of correct
weight certification on the
shipper, two methods can be
employed – method one involves
the weighing of a packed
container at a weighbridge
while method two requires the
weighing of the contents and
adding the tare weight of the
container to the total.
The Cargo Handling Specialists
solution caters for method one.
“Our weighbridge is a mobile
system which means we will be
able to come to you,” Cargo
Handling Specialists director
Owen Bottomley told delegates
at an FTW/JCCI seminar on the
topic in Johannesburg.
“The weighbridge has four
posts which jack onto the ISO
blocks of a container and raise it
by 4cm. It transmits the weight
from each load cell so that it
transmits the load distribution
in your container, the gross
mass and GPS location onto the
operator’s smartphone. He then
enters your container number
and seal number and that gets
emailed to you as a certificate.
“It’s a quick and easy solution
– particularly for clients packing
at their own premises,” said
Bottomley. “We’re expecting
that the cost will be around
R700 per container.”
Set up 21 years ago in
Cape Town, the company has
evolved from a crating service
to a specialised cargo handling
company and will shortly be
opening offices in Johannesburg.
