MITSUI SHIPPING Line has introduced a fully containerised fortnightly service from Beira calling direct at Dar-es-Salaam, Mombasa, Cochin, Colombo, Port Keland and Singapore.
Mitsui is planning to tranship in Colombo for the Indian ports, and in Singapore with transhipment world-wide.
The new service commenced with the 1,000teu 'Asian Challenger' on August 14. The reserved capacity per sailing for Beira is 250/300teu's.
Improved infrastructure at Beira has encouraged the move, say Mitsui with Beira now handling cargo which is currently being shipped via other ports.
Unlike the former procedure which was via feeder to Durban and from there to the East, the direct sailing will allow connection with a world-wide network, regular fortnightly sailings and improved transit time, which will be 18 days from Singapore to Beira.
