The port of Maputo – which handled a record of 19.5 million tonnes of cargo last year – expects to see its cargo handling capacity grow to 26.5 million tonnes this year after it completes rehabilitation of berths 6, 7, 8 and 9 in the latter half of the year.
A statement from the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) attributed the 7% growth in volumes last year to the dredging of the bay of Maputo towards the end of 2017.
The berth rehabilitation this year will not only create berths with a draught of up to -15 metres, but it will improve the occupancy rate of berths by creating a larger mooring area, according to an MPDC spokesperson.
