The first dealership for electric vehicles (EVs) has opened in Malawi’s capital city, Lilongwe, where these vehicles can be seen on the streets of the city already.
Sky Energy, headed by Schizzo Thomson, has opened the first dealership offering marques such as Citroen, Wuling Air and BYD.
“EVs are the emerging technology in the global push for clean and affordable mobility. As such it is no surprise that this shift in Malawi’s transport and automobile sector is being pioneered by Sky Energy, a youth-led enterprise with its eyes firmly set on sustainable technologies and solutions for the future,” a statement from Sky Energy said.
It added: “This strategic expansion aligns seamlessly with our mission to drive positive environmental impact and promote a greener tomorrow for the people of Malawi.”
The EV rollout includes a fast charger network that can provide 350 kilometres of travel on a single charge.
The strategic network of fast chargers will not only enable long-distance travel but will also contribute to the mainstream adoption of electric vehicles, making sustainable transportation a practice and accessible option for everyone, including deliveries.
Oil giant Total has partnered with Sky Energy to install chargers at its fuel stations and strategic locations. Sky Energy has installed solar power in all Total and Puma fuel stations during the past three years.
