After a thorough assessment by a specialist team of engineers, the John Ross Highway was reopened today (Monday) and no major traffic challenges have been reported, according to the KwaZulu Natal (KZN) Department of Transport.
This follows the collapse of the road on both of the eastbound lanes on Friday resulting in closure of the main road which leads to the port
According to KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, the dual carriageway on the westbound lanes has been converted into single carriageway roads and road markings as well as signage has been erected.
“The damage caused on this road will impact the economy of the province, and that of uMhlathuze municipality, due to traffic disturbance,” he said. “The urgent reopening of the [damaged] section of this road is important to continue ensuring economic growth and social stability.”
Structural engineers have stated that the possible cause of the sinkhole – approximately five metres wide – was due to water pressure from the pipes running underneath the road, resulting in a blockage and a collapse of the structure.
No injuries were recorded during the incident and repairs will begin on Wednesday, August 30. Construction is expected to take around ten weeks to complete.
