Maseru Bridge border post between South Africa and Lesotho has been closed temporarily.
Mike Fitzmaurice of the Federation of East and Southern African Road Transport Associations confirmed that there was a group of truck drivers on the Lesotho side who had blocked the border.
“They have some grievances, but it is unclear what the issues are at this point. They are now negotiating with the South African side of the border. Cargo is not being allowed in or out of Lesotho.”
Fitzmaurice said that he was waiting for an update from SA Revenue Service regarding the matter.
When asked if cargo was being diverted, Fitzmaurice said: “Cargo at this stage is not being diverted anywhere because getting from Maseru to Ficksburg is a long way and transporters are not willing to risk the travel. For now, truck drivers are waiting it out.”
(*) Fitzmaurice has confirmed that the Maseru Bridge border post has been reopened since the story was posted. He said that it was still unclear what the truckers' grievances were. Freight News will continue to update this story.
