Nigeria’s only deep-sea port berthed the largest container carrier ever to visit the country’s maritime sector.
The managing director and chief executive officer of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Bello Koko, said the berthing of the Maersk Edime at Lekki Port was a feat in itself but also justified the pioneering of full automation and facilitation of transhipment at the port.
He said it proved Nigeria’s readiness to exceed stakeholders’ expectations.
The box ship measures 367 meters in length and is 48.2m wide.
It carries a gross registered tonnage of 142.131 metric tonnes and a deadweight tonnage of 147.340m/t.
Prior to this call, the largest vessels to sail in Nigerian waters were MV Stadelhorn and MSC Maureen, respectively calling at Onne Port and Tin Can Island Port.
