Agricultural union TLU SA on Thursday labelled government’s decision to change the Constitution to allow for land expropriation without compensation as “short-sighted”.
The national assembly approved the motion to introduce the legislation on Thursday and the committee is expected to provide feedback by the end of March 2020.
According to union president Louis Meintjes, expropriation without compensation will not deliver good results.
“Research shows most of the applicants do not have the knowledge or capacity to sustainably manage the land, which at the moment contributes significantly to the economy.
“The past has shown us most of the land previously expropriated now lies barren because the government did not care enough to support the new,” Meintjes added.
He added that such decisions would have an effect on the safety of farmers.
“Just last week President Cyril Ramaphosa said he condemns farm murders but his government made decisions which contradict it completely.”
