The Kenya Leather Development Authority (KLDA) has taken decisive action to grow its leather production industry – with the construction of a leather industry park on the cards.
China, its largest importer, has drastically cut imports of semi-processed leather products over quality concerns while smuggling of raw hides and skins has also stifled industry growth.
KLDA chief executive, Dr Issack Noor, said that the construction of the park was “aimed at providing a one-stop shop for leather, footwear, leather goods and allied industries”.
The KLDA said that the country needed to work hard to restore the industry as investors were looking towards neighbouring countries Ethiopia and Tanzania for opportunities.
