Traffic cable faults decreased by 20% in Johannesburg from November 2016 to September 2017.
This followed the implementation of the “No-Joints Policy” and additional interventions to tackle traffic signal downtime, according to a statement released by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).
MMC for Transport, councillor Nonhlanhla Makhuba, noted that the No-Joints Policy involved the removal of old and damaged joints that gave rise to repeated faults as well as the implementation of a Smart Traffic System that remotely monitored traffic signals to ensure faults were detected and technicians sent out immediately to repair them.
“427 Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) units have been installed across the city to provide power to intersections during outages, allowing Eskom and City Power to address faults within 24 hours,” she added.
The turnaround time per fault repair is currently at 21 hours and the JRA has set aside R30 million towards the roll-out of 230 additional UPS units over the current financial year.
