Standards organisations across Africa should develop common systems and standards that sustainably support social, economic, trade and industrial integration to ensure trade facilitation on the continent.
“For South Africa, the benefits of enhanced access to regional markets could significantly boost our economy, ignite industrialisation and foster regional harmony. The opportunities for capacity building, job creation, sharing of resources and technologies could be the elixir for our economic challenges,” said Garth Strachan, acting CEO of the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).
He was addressing delegates at the 42nd General Assembly of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), under way in Cape Town this week.
The African continent is currently the second-largest export destination for South Africa.
