The Hawks have swooped on five former Transnet senior executives, including former group CEO Siyabonga Gama, who appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Friday where they are facing a slew of fraud, corruption and money-laundering charges.
Former group chief financial officer Garry Pita, former group treasurer Phetolo Ramosebudi, Eric Wood of Regiments, and Daniel Roy, Trillian Asset Management director, joined Gama in the dock. Kuben Moodley, who stands accused of working as a “fixer” for the Gupta family, also appeared in court with the executives. Moodley was arrested in September 2021 and is out on bail.
Investigating directorate spokesperson Sindisiwe Seboka said the men were facing charges of contravening the Public Finance Management Act, fraud, corruption and money laundering.
She said the five men had been arrested early on Friday morning.
“The Investigating Directorate and the Hawks have arrested five accused who will appear before the Palm Ridge Magistrates' Court sitting as the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court this morning,” Seboka said.
“The arrest took place around 7am this morning at the Brackendowns Police Station,” she said.
The accused planned to oppose the media’s attendance in court, she added.
This is a developing story.
