Companies wanting to airfreight cargo in and out of Namibia can use direct f lights between a growing number of international destinations rather than routing through Johannesburg.A number of freight forwarders and cargo owners interviewed by Freight News in Namibia welcomed this development as it offers direct links to the rest of the world and alternatives to sea freight, which has become too unreliable for time-sensitive freight.It is part of a continent-wide increase in the use of airfreight.International Air Transport Association (Iata) statistics for March 2022 show a 23% growth in air ton kilometres (CTK) f lown compared to March 2019 (before Covid). Global growth was 4.7% for the same period.International airlines include Condor (German leisure airline), Ethiopian, Lufthansa, FlyWestAir KLM Royal Dutch, and Eurowings. From June Qatar Airways is resuming its service to Windhoek, with three weekly f lights between Windhoek and Qatar using a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.Local links are provided by Airlink and British Airways/Comair, which operate between Cape Town and Gauteng and Walvis Bay and Windhoek.
