Darren Jankelow, maritime cranes sales manager at Liebherr-Africa, says these developments highlight the increasing need for versatile crane solutions.“Our harbour mobile cranes are renowned for their unmatched adaptability in meeting the evolving demands of modern ports,” he told Freight News. “Ports in southern Africa face challenges such as ageing infrastructure, congestion and the need to meet changing global trade demands. Additionally, there is a pressing need for investment in new port and material handling equipment to enhance operational efficiency and accommodate larger vessels.”According to Jankelow, while some ports face more significant challenges due to high congestion and limited resources, they must provide tailored solutions to help them overcome these hurdles. “Liebherr works closely with all ports in the region to assess their needs and provide the right equipment and support to ensure seamless operations,” he said. “Several regional ports, such as Durban, Walvis Bay and Maputo, have made significant strides in modernising their operations and expanding capacity. These improvements are encouraging and demonstrate the potential for southern Africa to become a key player in global trade.”Jankelow said in light of the ongoing developments in the region, Liebherr had strengthened its regional support network to ensure faster service delivery and improved after-sales care.“Increased opportunities lie in upgrading infrastructure, implementing digital technologies and expanding intermodal connectivity to streamline logistics,” he said. “The growing demand for container handling and increased trade volumes create a need for high-performance equipment like Liebherr’s rubber-tyre gantry cranes and ship-to-shore gantry cranes, which ensure efficiency and reliability.”With trade volumes on the rise, driven by the region’s growing economies, infrastructure investments and strategic position as a trade gateway between Africa, Asia and Europe, the demand for diversified cargo handling capabilities will continue to grow. “This will reinforce the need for versatile crane solutions,” said Jankelow.
