Government will not rest on its laurels following significantly improved statistics around traffic management during the peak Easter holiday period but will, instead, heighten focus on road safety as a 365 day and 24/7 activity.
That was the message from Minister of Transport, Blade Nzimande, following a press conference held yesterday (Thursday) to announce the results of the Easter Road Safety Campaign. “Although we have significantly reduced our crashes and fatalities on our roads, we can still do more to eradicate this calamity on our roads because one death is too many,” he said.
Nzimande said that the number of fatalities on the roads had decreased by 48% from 309 in 2018 to 162 in 2019.
“South Africa subscribes to the modern global approach to road safety, known as the safe systems approach, it recognises that we can best achieve our objectives to reduce fatalities by integrating safer roads, safer vehicles, more effective post-crash responses and sustained education and awareness campaigns,” he explained.
