Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has revamped the board of South Africa’s logistics utility, appointing a former Anglo American mining executive as its chairperson and several other industry experts as non-executive directors.
Gordhan announced a raft of new board appointments at the troubled state-owned entity, a statement said.
He appointed former vice president of the Minerals Council South Africa and ex-executive head of Anglo American South Africa, Andile Sangqu, as the new chairperson.
He also appointed Engineering Council of South Africa president Refilwe Buthelezi, global supply chain coach and chief executive officer of Sincpoint, Lebogang Letsoalo, and an executive director at Experion global with in-depth knowledge of the maritime industry, Martin Debel, among eight other non-executive directors.
Non-executive directors Popo Molefe and Sydney Mufamadi will retain their posts.
“As the Government’s shareholder representative, it gives me great pleasure to announce
these new appointments as they will ensure strategic alignment in Transnet’s pursuit of its
mandate as a key lever and driver of our economic engine, development and
transformation,” Gordhan said.
“These appointments will put Transnet on a firm strategic path that provides critical
expertise, experience, and acumen for Transnet,” he added.
It is hoped that the new board will help the state-owned company to implement its roadmap, execute its business plan, improve governance and optimise performance, the new board statement said.
The Transnet board will now have 13 directors comprising 11 non-executive directors and two executive directors.
