The success of heavy haul railway operations needs to be transferred to Transnet Freight Rail’s (TFR) general cargo movements, said Brian Monakali, general manager: capital planning at TFR. “Our heavy haul network only comprises 7% of TFR’s total route network, yet it transports over 60% of the total volumes we handle every year,” he said. Speaking at the annual International Heavy Haul Association conference in Cape Town last week, Monakali said while TFR was still grappling with the general freight business, its success in the heavy haul sector was undisputed. Monakeli highlighted that TFR’s growth was intrinsically linked to the growth in its general freight business. “So if we want to move more general freight we have to look at our success in the heavy haul sector and apply the same principles.”
