I HAVE followed with interest the negative economic forecasts since the September 11 World Trade Centre attacks.
I do not think that we as South Africans will be that badly affected as the United States was not one of our main export or import markets.
South African business is also battle-hardened after having had to deal with sanctions and boycotts in the 70s and 80s. Internationally South African business is seen in a much more favourable light than 10-15 years ago and for this reason container traffic to and from South Africa will remain constant and, who knows, even increase!
The South African freight industry is alive and well and for those who have any doubts my suggestion would be to take a drive to Durban harbour and notice for yourselves how many containers are moving in and out of the harbour at the moment.
