News this morning is that the R59 between Parys and Bothaville in the Free State has flooded, with traffic halted on either side of what appears to be a swollen tributary of the Vaal River.
According to a Google Maps location posted by the Transit Assistance Bureau (Transist), the flooding occurred south-west of Viljoenskroon.
More flooding along the river leading out of the Vaal Dam is extremely likely due to incessant rain that has fallen over the Highveld and environs.
Over the weekend it was reported that the dam was 112% full.
It led to several sluice gates being opened, with vast quantities of water released further down the Vaal River system, resulting in flooding towards the Bothaville Dam and beyond.
At one stage the equivalent of six regular-sized swimming pools cascaded out of the Vaal Dam’s sluices per second.
