The cold chain industry in southern Africa is experiencing a surge in demand as temperature-controlled logistics services become increasingly sought after, especially in emerging sectors such as pharmaceuticals. This growing demand has prompted the industry to embrace cutting-edge technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain, to enhance supply chain visibility and optimise ef f icienc y.The adoption of IoT and blockchain solutions has revolutionised the way goods are transported and stored within the cold chain, says Dirushen Pillay, sales director of Land and Sea Shipping. “These technologies enable real-time monitoring of temperature, humidity, and other critical factors, ensuring the integrity and safety of perishable products throughout the supply chain. With enhanced visibility, stakeholders can proactively identify and resolve any potential issues, minimising the risk of spoilage or compromised quality.”Moreover, the integration of blockchain technology provides an added layer of transparency and security. In addition to technological advancements, there is also a shift towards sustainability. “Stakeholders are increasingly prioritising eco-friendly packaging solutions that reduce waste and minimise environmental impact,” says Pillay. “This focus on sustainable packaging is driven by a growing awareness of the need to address the environmental challenges associated with traditional packaging materials. By adopting innovative and environmentally conscious packaging options, the industry aims to contribute to a greener and more sustainable f uture.”He says the rise in demand for temperature-controlled logistics services, coupled with the integration of IoT, blockchain, and sustainable packaging solutions, is transforming the cold chain industry in southern Africa. “These developments not only improve operational efficiency but also ensure the safe and reliable delivery of perishable goods, meeting the evolving needs of customers across various sectors.”According to Pillay, with increasing demand for temperature-controlled logistics solutions and government investment in infrastructure and technology, the sector is projected to continue growing over the next five years. “There are promising prospects for cold chain logistics, particularly within the food and beverage industry, pharmaceutical industry, and e-commerce. The increasing need for temperature-controlled logistics solutions presents attractive opportunities for investment and expansion in the region's cold chain logistics market.”As an Iata agent, the company is focusing its efforts on the airfreight market, aiming to establish a more efficient and expedited process for customers. “Our warehouses are located near airports for timely delivery. We conduct full inspections to ensure product quality. We also offer comprehensive cold chain solutions, including warehousing and transportation services for import and export cargo,” he says.
