An affiliate of the Egyptian Ministry of Transport, Alkahera Company for Ferries and Maritime Transport (KCFMT), has signed a deal with Korean company Dae Sun to construct two multipurpose vessels.
The KCFMT, a ministry affiliate, is currently in charge of two ferries, Cairo and Riyadh, and will take delivery of the multipurpose newbuilds in February and April 2025.
“The two ships will facilitate the export of Egyptian products to regional markets, and will be able to transport general cargo, bulk cargo, heavy cargo, vehicles, project cargo, and refrigerated products, such as fruits, vegetables, meat, and seafood,” said Kamel El-Wazir, Egypt’s minister of transport.
The vessels will have a holding capacity of 15 800 cubic metres, a cargo load of 14 000 dwt units, and will have the capacity to hold about 700 standard containers and 98 refrigerated containers.
Furthermore, El-Wazir said there were multiple plans to manufacture commercial ships through cooperation with several international companies, including Dae Sun, and to develop the Said Port and Suez shipyard in cooperation with partner, the Suez Canal Authority.
He added that there was a plan to provide Alkahera with four more ships, increasing its fleet to eight.
