Transnet has confirmed that it is investigating the cause of the collapse of a straddle carrier that injured a worker and brought operations in the Durban Container Terminal (DCT) Pier 2 to a standstill on Wednesday.
Several photographs of the collapsed equipment were circulated widely on social media but port users were in the dark about what transpired, other than experiencing the impact of the breakdown.
“It appears that the straddle carrier capsized and operations came to a standstill this afternoon. We cannot get any info from TPT (Transnet Port Terminals),” one port user said.
TPT said in a statement that the incident had briefly impacted port operations at the terminal on Wednesday afternoon.
“A straddle carrier operator at the Durban Container Terminal (DCT) Pier 2 was attended to by terminal paramedics and taken to St Augustine’s Hospital for further treatment yesterday. This follows the overturning of a straddle carrier within landside operations,” TPT said.
“Operations within the affected section were affected for two hours before resuming fully. The cause of the incident is being investigated. The terminal’s landside fleet has been sufficient for current throughput, with the one straddle carrier out of commission.”
