Transnet’s plans to extend the existing automotive terminal at the Port of Durban will require the demolition of the building that holds the port’s Vessel Tracking System (VTS) Radar.
The expansion plan, which will transform the entire T-jetty into the expanded car terminal, requires the demolition of the iconic Ocean Terminal Building, the adjacent Durmarine harbourmaster’s building and several cargo sheds.
The Durmarine building houses the port’s VTS Radar, which will need to be relocated within the port when the building is decommissioned.
A site selection process and options analysis led to the decision to relocate it to an empty site between the Wilson’s Wharf complex and the Maydon Wharf fishing port. The proposed VTS Tower will be placed on a 42m-high lattice structure that will not be attached to a building.
The Draft Basic Assessment Report for the relocation has been published for public comment and can be accessed at https://nemai.co.za/environmental/downloadable-documents/. Written comments on these reports must be sent to zmakapela@gibbenvironmental.co.za. The deadline for comments is 21 May 2024.
