The eThekwini Municipality has completed a R127.9 million road rehabilitation programme that upgraded several key transport routes serving the Port of Durban.
The project restored approximately 65 lane kilometres across 13 roads in the city's inner core as part of the municipality's Inner-City Regeneration Programme. Roads upgraded include Umgeni Road, Soldiers Way, K E Masinga Road and sections of the M4 – all of which form part of the road network used by commercial vehicles accessing the Port of Durban.
According to the municipality, the programme aims to improve the movement of people and goods while maintaining strategic transport infrastructure. The work included road resurfacing, drainage improvements, road markings and other safety enhancements.
The investment reflected its commitment to maintaining Durban's transport network, the municipality said, adding that well-maintained roads were essential to supporting economic activity.
Acting Deputy Director of Roads and Infrastructure Management, Thanda Zulu, said the rehabilitation programme demonstrated the city's commitment to rebuilding critical infrastructure that supported mobility and economic growth.
"The investment in our inner-city road network reflects the municipality's commitment to rebuilding critical infrastructure that works for everyone, where roads are safer, businesses can operate more efficiently and communities are better connected," Zulu said.
The upgraded routes are among the key road corridors linking Durban's industrial areas with South Africa's busiest container port and are widely used by freight operators transporting cargo to and from the harbour.
