Banana producers in Mozambique have seen a drop of up to 50% in their exports to South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho due to ongoing drought in the country,
One of Mozambique's major commercial banana producers, Bananalandia – which has a plantation in the Boane district, about 30 kilometres west of Maputo – said in a statement
that since government had introduced water restrictions in December 2016, production had fallen by over 50%, and the quality of the bananas had also suffered.
Director of production at Bananalandia said the company had been forced to stop production of extra-large bananas. “The average weight of a bunch of bananas has fallen from 60 to 50 kilos which of course brings in less revenue,” he said.
